Fractured Online – June 16 Patch

Today’s patch brings a few changes to Fractured Online – some new, some returning, and some requested quality of life updates!

Give Aerhen Love

It was about time that Aerhen, our latest continent, received some well-deserved love and attention.

With this update, we’re finally making its most central location, Dawn Island, available for everyone to explore. The place is filled with the glimmering Crystal Elementals, from which you can acquire the following brand new abilities: Crystalline Skin, Crystalline Touch, Crystal Shackles, Primal Storm. Get ready to tweak and adapt your build(s)!

Adding to the above, we’ve also fixed the nodes of Sulphurite and Platinum, brand new resources found only on Aerhen that you can use for crafting!

To make it all easier to explore, we’ve updated the minimap of Aerhen, giving it a more cartoonish/stylized look. This change should make it much easier to identify roads and cliffs. If you like it, we could do it for Myr too!

Please mind that’s not all, as Aerhen still has more love coming and you can expect to meet its new fearsome Legends very soon!

Raids Re-Enabled!

Raids may now be launched again by a city against another city on the same continent, disregarding if it’s neighboring or not.

A successful raid will award the winning city with an amount of gold and food equal to that required to raise the losing city from its previous rank to its current one. If the losing city has enough food and gold in its treasury, said amount will be subtracted, otherwise nothing is subtracted but the losing city is deranked.

Mage Staff Upgrades

Mage Staves have been updated both visually and mechanically. All of them, with the exception of the Primitive Staff, now have unique properties and a new visual and sound effects.

  • Energy Staff‘s special attribute is 15% Cooldown Reduction.
  • Fire Staff‘s special attribute is +10 Warm stacks per hit.
  • Ice Staff‘s special attribute is +10 Chilled stacks per hit.
  • Shock Staff‘s special attribute is +10 Shocked stacks per hit.
  • Poison Staff‘s special attribute is +5 Poison stacks per hit.
  • Acid Staff‘s special attribute is +10 Corrosion stacks per hit.

This adds to the previous patch and is part of our work to make mage characters more competitive in the PvP and PvE end-game.

Player Corpse Markers

We all hate that fated moment when we die from an epic battle… or starve in the comfort of our homes.

Regardless of where you died, you will now be able to easily locate your death location on the map and minimap with a skull marker, which is only visible to the player the corpse belongs to.

New Sound Effects

Even more abilities that were previously silent have received new sound effects.

We’re talking of over 20 abilities, meaning that there’s only a handful left now that are still silent or re-use the sound effects of other abilities!

Bug fixes

  • All status effects except diseases (e.g. Necrotic Disease) are now removed when a player gets knocked down.
  • Fixed a bug that would sometimes make monsters take no damage if they moved from a server worker to a different one
  • The Hit Incorporeal Being property given by some materials now works as intended. It allows players to hit incorporeal beings such as Woodland Wisps with melee weapons and arrows.
  • Fixed a bug that would make arrows shot from a bow with Damage Conversion apply the magical damage portion twice.
  • Crafting items from crafting stations in the tutorial island no longer requires paying the items’ basic crafting fee.

Head on over to our Forums and Discord should you have any feedback!

Fractured Online – June 7 Patch Notes

Hello adventurers,

today’s patch brings a lot of changes, quality of life updates and bug fixes!

We have a lot to go through, so without further ado, let’s see what’s new!

Chat Upgrade

We’ve heard you loud and clear and we’re happy to deliver the highly requested chat upgrades to Fractured Online!

Three new global chat channels have been introduced: Trade, Recruit and Help. Additionally, you will now be able to create your own chat categories and decide which channels you receive in each category. This is done by selecting a category and clicking on the gear icon next to the name.

The 6 categories provided by default are:

  • General, which receives all channels
  • Local, which receives the local channel
  • Trade, which receives the trade channel
  • Help, which receives the help channel
  • Party, which receives your party chat
  • Guild, which receives your Guild’s chat

Please note these are just the defaults. As mentioned above, you can rename each category and its content as you like.

Trusted Citizen Role

Trusted Citizen is a new role above Citizen and directly below Vice-Governor, which allows the governor to accept more “untrusted” players without worrying about them stealing from common containers.

The role grants the following permissions:

  • Use all processing stations with an internal inventory (for now: Tanning Tub, Smeltery, Packaging Station)
  • Use stockpiles
  • Use chests
  • Seed and harvest farming plots
  • Interact with the Siege Workshop and catapults

In sum, the role of regular Citizen now exists to allow players to join a city, get a land claim within it, use “instant” crafting stations that would be unusable if the “global access level” is set to “citizens only”, and enjoy a different taxation. For anything more, you have to become a Trusted Citizen!

K.O Popup Rework

The K.O. popup has been reworked for more visual clarity.

The popup now shows the 30-seconds timer with a different color and only includes one button called “Suicide”, which brings up a warning popup. If you decide to click on “suicide” in the warning popup as well, you will die and are presented with the usual death window, where you’re prompted to choose one of the three possible respawn locations.

This will hopefully put an end to new players accidentally killing themselves when KO because they don’t like to read texts 😉

Poison and Bleed Rework

Poison and bleeding mechanics have been reworked along with the spells that apply them.

The two status effects are now stack-based, with stacks that grow up to 100 and decay at a rate of 2/second. This is much slower than Chilled, Warm, Shocked and Corrosion, which decay at a rate of 5/second. Their effects get stronger the higher the number of stacks.

Bleeding now deals 2% to 8% of the target’s max health every 4 seconds as Pure damage. If the target is moving it also takes half that damage every 0.5 seconds.

Poison instead now deals 5% to 30% of the target’s max health every 3 seconds as Poison damage.

Stealth Rework

Stealth is no longer a permanent status effect that lasts until the creature revealed or reveals itself. It now has a maximum duration, determined by the ability used to activate it and the player’s Stealth modifier.

The reveal mechanics are still present and unchanged.

Multi-Loot QOL Update

Clicking on a point on the map with multiple corpses stacked on top each other now opens the inventory of all corpses.

Please note that items cannot be moved from the inventory of a corpse to another.

Balance Update

Along with the changes above, today’s update comes with a plethora of balance changes.

  • The decay rate of Chilled, Shocked, Warm and Corrosion stacks has been halved from 0.1 seconds to 0.2 seconds.
  • Battlemage Armor has been changed:
    ○ Before: “This effect is cumulative and stacks up to a bonus of 300 Energy Damage.”
    ○ After: “This effect is cumulative and stacks up to an Energy Damage bonus equal to twice the Base Damage of your current weapon.”
  • Silence now only prevents casting magical spells and doesn’t turn off spells that are already active on the victim. A future status effect called Atrophy will become the equivalent of Silence for fighting abilities belonging to the Warfare, Assassination, Hunting and Leadership schools.
  • The bonus from the Scholar Clothes to spell damage has been increased from 2% to 3% and the maximum bonus has been increased from 20% to 30%.
  • Damage Increase no longer stacks with Critical Damage for weapon attacks.
    “. Example: your base damage is 200, your Damage Increase bonus is +50%, your Critical Damage is +100%.Before: 200 x 1.5 x 2 = 600. Now: 200 x 1.5 + 200 x 1 = 500.”
  • Globe of Spell Protection and Absorb Elements are now usable with both Light and Medium Armor.
  • The Cooldown Reduction from the Warlock armor set has been decreased from 80% to 70%.
  • Guided Shot can no longer be Critical, but now deals PER*30 extra damage instead of PER*25.

New Sound Effects

  • All the Elemental creatures of Aerhen now have sound effects and longer reuse those of the Earth Elementals on Myr.
  • Totems now play sound effects on death.
  • Sound effects have been added to dozens of spells that were previously silent.

Bug Fixes

  • Cobweb now correctly applies Snare on all creatures when spawned and has friendly fire.
  • Monsters now attack players after revealing them.
  • Icons of discovered Points of Interest no longer revert to “?” after relogging.
  • The Thick-Skinned talent now correctly reduced physical damage only.
  • The monster death sound is no longer replayed when a dead monster enters the field of view of the game client.
  • The color of damage numbers now correctly matches the type of damage:
“Red/Yellow for physical damage types, Purple/Violet for magical damage types instead of Red/Yellow for weapon damage, Purple/Violet for ability damage.”

When: During the stream @ 9:30 PM CEST / 12:30 PM PST / 3:30 PM EST

Unlucky adventurers have discovered a peculiar parchment in close proximity to one of the many townships of Myr, with unease, the scripture reads so:

“Your most sagacious Master Hel Efix,

the requested summoning liturgy has almost been completed, whilst we cannot reach the living land of the humans, we of the Denomination of the Masked God are still capable to stir the lands and its living core to fulfil Lord Arcahem’s need for utter despair and separation amongst the common man.

Whilst we cannot recreate the large scale eruption that was the Dark Convergence, we are keen on the turmoil that the Obsidian Rupture is able to generate.

The Ebony Compass will allow the Obsidian Rupture to proliferate its influence at -2971W -1558N. Sadly we’re unable to create pinpoint accurate demonic predicaments on Syndesia, although this will create sufficient unrest while we work on your most outstanding project.

Master Hel Efix, the Obsidian Rupture is an experiment you will not want to miss.

Our eternal allegiance,
Cal Ezseh”

See you there adventurers in-game and on stream!

Feature Spotlight – Temperature & Weather System

Sweater? Check. Sandals? Um… check? Umbrella?! Where are we going that we will need all these items? Now that the temperature and weather system has been released, players will need to adapt to the game’s ever-changing landscape at a moment’s notice.

In Fractured Online, temperatures vary depending on 3 main factors:

  • World Biome
  • Time of day
  • Weather

The Fractured Online world is vast and diverse. Different biomes come with many unique features, including different temperature ranges. A biome’s temperature range is defined by a temperature/time curve that dictates the temperature variation of a biome during the day/night cycle.

The combination of biome and time of day defines its base temperature at any given time, which can then be altered further by different weather events, either in a positive or negative direction, depending on the event.

Temperatures aren’t implemented just to add a bit of spice to Fractured Online, but instead, they can influence the gameplay. More or less extreme temperatures may force the player to prepare differently before venturing into the world.

Generally speaking, venturing unprepared in a very cold climate may trigger the “Chilled” status effect on the player. Alternatively, venturing in a very hot climate may trigger the “Warm” effect. The “Frozen” and “Burning” effects, which usually occur respectively at 100 Chilled and Warm stacks, are never triggered by the temperature alone.

Different character races have different tolerance thresholds to temperatures, which can be further modified by worn equipment, abilities, and potions (potions will be added once alchemy is introduced in a future update).

To briefly explain the system, we will consider what happens when the temperature gets too cold and how it can be prevented.

  • The system is symmetrical for hot temperatures.
  • Each player has a minimum temperature tolerance, which solely depends on its race.
  • Whenever the temperature goes below the minimum temperature tolerance, the player is out of its comfort zone, and starts getting Chilled. Stacks are added at a rate of 1 stack every 10 seconds (the Chilled effect can have up to 100 stacks).
  • Stacks gained this way don’t decay over time (as they usually do).
  • The maximum number of stacks depends on how cold it is: for each 1°C below the minimum threshold, the maximum number of stacks increases by 10.

Let’s give an example:

  • Your minimum temperature tolerance is 5°C. The temperature is 0°. You currently have 0 Chilled stacks.
  • You start gaining Chilled stacks at a rate of 1 stack every 10 seconds, until you reach 50 stacks, since the temperature if 5°C lower than your tolerance (5×10 = 50).
  • If you travel to a slightly warmer area, let’s say 3°C, your 50 Chilled stacks will start decaying normally, until you reach 20 stacks, since you are still 2°C lower than your tolerance.

Finally, Chilled and Warm status effects are not exclusive to the temperature system. They can also be triggered by other outside influences, like player spells, and are countered by each other (chilled counters warm and vice-versa). Variations in the amount of Chilled and Warm stacks caused by external factors happen normally and are not influenced by the world temperature.

Returning to the example above:

  • You are now at 0°C and with 50 Chilled stacks. In these conditions, your stacks won’t decay nor increase.
  • Let’s say that a Fireball spell, among other effects, adds 50 Warm stacks to anyone hit by it. You are hit by a Fireball. Since you already had 50 Chilled stacks and each Warm stack removes 2 Chilled stacks, 25 of the 50 Warm stacks are consumed to remove all 50 Chilled stacks. The remaining 25 Warm stacks are added to you, so you end up with 0 Chilled stacks and 25 Warm stacks after being hit by that Fireball.
  • Now you are still at 0°C, which means you gain a Chilled stack every 10 seconds, up to 50. Similarly, to the effect of the Warm stacks on the Chilled stacks, whenever you would have gained a Chilled stack while under the Warm effect, you end up losing 2 Warm stacks instead.

It’s worth noting that Chilled and Warm stacks gained due to the temperature are added on a much slower pace than stacks gained from spells (1 stack every 10 seconds, as stated above). Spells always add 10+ stacks of either effect per hit and each stack decays in 0.1 seconds. This means that in extreme situations, a player may decide to hit himself with Fire or Ice based spells periodically to counter extreme temperatures.

A more orthodox way to counter extreme temperatures would be to wear adequate equipment. Most pieces of equipment come with a couple of special properties called “Heat Insulation” and “Cold Insulation.” Each property increases the player’s tolerance towards extremely hot and cold environments additively (NOTE: properties may also decrease tolerance if they are negative).

The table below shows an example of the effects of different pieces of armour to the base temperature tolerances of a player:

Some crafting materials also come with Heat and Cold Insulation properties, which are directly added to the final piece of equipment base values crafted with them.

Some spells like “Protection from Fire” and “Protection from Cold” grant you immunity to the Chilled and Warm status effects, which in turn may provide immunity to extreme temperature effects, at the cost of one ability slot and some mana/second to keep them active.

Potions that alter your temperature tolerances will also be added in the future.

In Fractured Online, the weather is determined by a dynamic system of circular clouds that can spawn in different zones within a continent.

Each cloud has its own life cycle: first it grows, gradually darkening the sun, then if it has a precipitation event assigned, it starts precipitating (rain, hail, snow, etc..) and gradually shrinking in size, and finally, as it reaches a smaller pre-determined size, it stops precipitating and starts dissipating completely.

Each cloud determines a specific weather event, and during its lifetime it determines the precipitation particle type, the wind intensity and turbulence, other special effects like lightning, and the temperature variation.

Each cloud, as stated above, is circular, and affects anyone within its range, which means that it’s possible for a player to enter a cloud while venturing in the world. Weather events in Fractured are not continent-based, but location-based!

All the effects of a cloud are interpolated depending on the distance from the center of the cloud. That means everything will be more intense in the middle and less intense at the borders of the cloud so that players will experience a gradual variation of the weather while entering a cloud zone.

Although quite rare, two or more clouds could potentially overlap, in which case the player will experience a mix of the effects from both clouds, weighted depending on the intensity of each cloud in that specific position and normalized between the two.

Each continent has different pre-determined weather zones with each zone offering a different setup. This determines the chance of a cloud to spawn within is range, the maximum number of clouds existing at once, the size of the clouds, and the type of clouds.

So far, we have 4 types of weather clouds, each one with a low intensity event and a high intensity event:

Cloud Type Low Intensity Event High Intensity Event
Storm Rain Storm
Thunderstorm Rain Thunderstorm
Sleet Storm Rain Sleet Storm
Blizzard Snow Blizzard

Note that not every cloud reaches its highest intensity. For example: a small Storm cloud may only result in a Rain event during its entire life cycle.

Right now, all the cloud types we have deliver a negative effect on the temperature. In the future, things may change as we add special events like firestorms, meteor strikes, acid rain, and other special events!

Please note: only the temperature system is available in the patch released on April 27, while the weather system is set to go live the following week.

It was the Heat of the Moment

As you can see, our temperature & weather system can and will influence each player’s adventure through Fractured Online. Whether it works in their favor or against completely relies on how prepared they are when met with a rainy day.

Bug Fixes

The update doesn’t only bring a new system to life, but plenty of bug fixes as well.

You can check them out in this forum post if interested!
