Fall 2024 Development Roadmap

October 15th, 2024 at 1:36 pm

Goodbye filler content, welcome Seasons, Dungeons and Free-To-Play. Beware: this post is packed with awesome visual previews!

Hi, fellow gamer and MMO enthusiast!

We are well aware you’ve been waiting for this update for way too long. Yes, we are also aware this is something you’ve heard before. We are sorry for the silence, but these last three weeks have been rather complex for us, as we’ve decided to radically shift our priorities compared to the last roadmap, following community feedback.

In a nutshell, we’ve decided to get away from creating “filler” content in favor of “big” content that will introduce solid end-game loops. What this means in practice are seasons and dungeons. Oh, and a change in business model, too. This likely won’t surprise any of you.

Read on for all the info, because there’s a ton here… with tons of visual records of progress, too!

Release r.0.4

Let’s start with the next patch! This isn’t exactly the most exciting update but is very close in time, as it’s coming out later this week.

The patch is focused on consumables, which have been completely reworked. In a nutshell, these are the major changes:

  • Consumables now have their own dedicated slot in the hotbar.
  • There are way more consumables than before, split into three different categories: poisons, bandages, and potions.
  • Consumables are much stronger than before, but their cooldown is higher.

Please note that the items that used to be called “potions” (the ones consumed from the inventory when resting) are now called “elixirs“. They have also been tweaked, in that a third power tier has been added, and their crafting requirements changed.

Together with this, the patch also includes a multitude of fixes and changes requested by the community, including:

  • New rules for fortresses: the combat phase now lasts for 30 minutes and they are twice as frequent (there’s an event every 2 hours instead of 4). In the future, once player population picks up steam again, we plan to have 2 fortresses active at the same time every 2 hours.
  • Better rewards for Iridia and Babilis trials, while Galvanos legends are now 5 instead of 3 but they are not no longer visible on the world map (only on the minimap).
  • Fixes to the most reported issues: Nelena teleport charges not being replenished, legend summons not disappearing, eviction notices being reset at restart, etc.

Moreover, the is going be another surprise coming with the launch of the patch! Stay tuned for the patch log!

Free To Play

Let’s get to the proverbial elephant in the room now. It’s been an “open secret” for a while that we are gearing up to transition from a B2P to a F2P business model.

There, the news is officially out!

The reasoning behind this choice is simple: the current box price of the game ($15) is very low, especially in developing markets (where it’s discounted further on Steam), and only accounts for a minority of our revenues. At the same time, the fact a box price exists at all still acts as a major barrier to acquiring new users. This is made even harder by the presence of strong F2P competitors in the market.

Our initial plan was to transition in October already, but following community feedback we decided to postpone so we could get more content into the game before (or soon after). The exact date will be released soon, with a list of all the things we’ve been doing (and still have to do) to support the transition.

Needless to say, everyone who has purchased or will purchase the game paying the box price (be it on Steam or by buying a Founder Pack) will be compensated for the $15 they have spent with VIP time and/or Dynamight Tokens!

Season I

On the day we switch to F2P, we are also going to launch the first Season of Fractured Online!

A Season lasts for 3 months and always combines elements of personal progression with guild progression. This means you can get most rewards as a solo player, but being part of a guild will make your guild earn additional rewards according to its final ranking in the leaderboard – which in turn reflects on you!

The menu above is a work in progress, so please be aware it will be different in its final version. As with everything in this post, a dedicated additional post will follow soon with the details.

Before Seasons are released, guild alliances are going to be implemented, as they are a core prerequisite for this to work. More details will follow on this topic as well.

Artifacts

The rewards of Season I include some of the unique materials required to craft artifacts, which we previously discussed at the bottom of this post.

These materials are to be found in dungeons, which are discussed below. Dungeons are a huge work and won’t be ready by the F2P launch, but Seasons will allow you to get the materials and craft them anyway!

Dungeons

While developers have been busy with the technicalities of the F2P transition and seasons, our art department has been hard at work to prepare the assets for dungeons!

Dungeons are instanced and accessible solo or with groups of different predetermined sizes. When entering, you are able to choose the difficulty level of the dungeon, which in turn influences rewards. They are designed as a purely PvE activity, but PvP dungeons are a possibility for a future expansion.

Creatures

What goes into dungeons? A ton of new monsters!

The families of creatures you will find in dungeons are both new ones and existing ones. You won’t learn abilities from them (even if they are creatures from the overworld), and they are going to be considerably stronger, with unique mechanics.

Also, mini-bosses and bosses. Like, a lot of them.

Localization

This is also something we have hinted to previously, but it’s time to put it into an official blog post. We are working to translate the game in the following languages:

  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • German
  • Polish

This means 7 languages in total by the F2P launch!

This is all for today. I’ve tried to keep it brief, and I think I managed.

Stay tuned for the patch later this week & enjoy Fractured Online!
