Why not choose to allow a character to migrate slowly their stats or attributes or skills towards what they're using? In your example of the occasional wizard with low intelligence, if he sets his attributes to migrate and keeps using his spells (intelligence based abilities), he could overtime increase in intelligence and decrease in, say, something else he had chosen to favor at first.

That approach comes straight from Ultima Online and, although we like it, from our experience we know it's very easily misunderstood by players. We'll likely go for something more straightforward - although, as I've mentioned elsewhere, the whole "change your attributes past character creation" topic is not set in stone in our current design iteration  (by that I mean: we'll let it happen but it will be severely restricted - totally different from talents and abilities - and haven't come to a decision on what this way will be yet).

Making such respecs cost knowledge points seems like the most logical solution to me, which leads me to another question: How many knowledge points can be obtained? Unlimited? Or does it stop once you have unlocked the whole map, the entire bestiary, all relics, etc.

This case of course every, but you can wait until the launch and then support)

If everyone thinks like this, there will never be a launch. 😉 Small independent companies like this one rely on help from the community to develop their game.

From what I see the game will be in isometrical view, is that right?
Or did I misread something, or is there confusion between isemetrical and birdseye view? (just to be clear about this)
Also I'd like to vote for more options.
It might put people at a disadvantage if they use a different movementset
but it will give them the opportunity to choose their favorit playstyle.
Maybe I am getting old but I prefer the gameplay to be fulfilling over beeing toprated as a player. I wouldn't start playing with touchscreen just because I'll get a better reactiontime out of it, because I am lazy and want to lay back in my chair, spinning around with q and e 😉
In my opinion its just more fun to be free to choose how to play and that includes controls

It's isometric and mouse-controlled yes. The devs said it's only possible to control a character through mouse control. Also, most skills are skillshots.

Ah, damn, thanks. But now I'm slightly puzzled as to prometheus comment on the build choice being persistent and the claim that choice matters?

Builds aren't permanent, only attributes seem somewhat permanent. Attributes will affect the effectiveness of the various builds you can make though. Magic builds aren't very viable with low intelligence. 😛

I definitely like the knowledge and skills approach you're describing here, @Prometheus.

My only concern is having a character that I eventually don't want to play anymore as it doesn't fit my playstyle based on choices I made while I didn't fully grasp the game. (ie when I first got on and created the character).

Thinking of something along the lines of what Life is Feudal is doing.

Otherwise, what's the rationale behind the design decision to lock in those choices made at character creation?

I agree. I am the kind of person who likes to focus on one character, especially in a game like Fractured where completing a character will probably take months or maybe even years. However, I also tend to change playstyles a lot. We know it's possible to change attributes a few times after character creation to give players a chance to correct their build in case they gimped themselves. I just hope there will be ways to earn more respecs.

    • What's your playstyle?

With the great build freedom we have in Fractured, I was wondering what everyone's playstyle is. What kind of characters/classes/roles do you like to play? Warriors? Rangers? Mages? Rogues? Tank, dps or healer?

Personally, I tend to gravitate towards melee, battlemages and engineers. Altough, in isometric games, I often go for ranged builds aswell even though I often find them a bit too easy to play. In terms of roles, I generally play all 3. (Tank, dps, healer).

Definitely not! We’re working to keep Fractured available on mid-range computers and laptops as well, including those a few years old.

I really dig it! I think a "knowledge" approach is really smart way to progress things!

I'm a little concerned about this paragraph, however:

Here, you can re-assign your Talent Points as many times as you want during a Resting phase. Yes, that’s it: just sit down in front of a fire change all your Talents to match the stats and abilities of your Hero, just like you do before a match of your favorite MOBA!

I'm a big fan of choices that have consequences, and feel like this might be antithetical to some of the other design principles you are going for.

Maybe I'm not understanding enough, but how will this not effectively make everyone the same and promote a "meta" where there's only one proper choice for a given task?

Well, you're still limited by the attributes you set at character creation. Other than that, good question. 😛

    • RE: Are you a PVP or PVE player?

@mewmew said in Are you a PVP or PVE player?:

I don't enjoy PvP in MMORPGs the majority of the time. Normally in MMORPGs the person who can spend the most time online is the strongest and it's very rarely a fair fight. I can't compete with time based power, I just don't have that much time to be on a game gaining it.

Personally I feel that a lot of skilled PvP players play games that equalize everybody and take real skill rather than just overpowering somebody because you've been building up in the game longer than they have. It's why there are so many gankers in MMORPGs, a great many of the people who want an actual PvP contest get their PvP elsewhere where things are more equal. We get a lot of leftover people who want to gank people lower than they are and mess with people who don't want to be involved in PvP at all. I know that's not all of them obviously, but we get a lot like that.

Saying most people enjoy PvP is not true. Most MMORPGs that have separate PvP and PvE servers have far far greater population on the PvE servers (this isn't always the case but usually). There is a far greater PvE population of MMORPG players than PvP.

I'm hoping the PvE here is done right where they don't try to lure us into PvP zones by putting the best resources there or something so the PKers have people to gank. It seems despite these games having more PvE players than PvP players they often lean towards trying to keep the PvP players happy and giving them people to kill who don't want to be involved in PvP by putting stuff in PvP zones that can't be got elsewhere, the best loot, quests, the best monsters or bosses, etc. And that isn't that fun for people looking for a PvE experience.

There are so many games out though, that they can do whatever they want and we'll just either play or not based on what they choose to do. I'd rather they did a good PvE job so I could stay here and enjoy playing (and in fact it's the only reason I'm here because I read an article saying no forced PvP), but if they don't I'll just go elsewhere to one of the tons of other games out there rather than stick around squawking trying to get things changed 😸

Copying my comment from MassivelyOP here:

Well, if you’re a completionist, you will certainly have to go to the PvP planets sometime to get everything. With that said, as far as I am aware it’s certainly possible for players to stay on their own planet if they so desire.

You don’t have to worry about endgame being locked behind PvP. While every planet has it’s own unique resources, it’s more about variety rather than specific endgame resources that are better than others. The beastmen planet has lots of wood for example while the human planet has lots of metal. Now you might think, what if I want plate armor for my beastmen character? Well, in Fractured, equipment is more than just a stat boost. There’s a climate system and some pieces of clothing are better than others in certain environments. For all we know, large parts of the beastmen planet just aren’t suitable for plate armor. Also, if you need a resource from a PvP planet to craft a specific item you want, you can always buy that resource from an other player.

In terms of endgame content like quests and events, the beastmen planet will actually have the most PvE events to make up for the fact that they have none of the big PvP events.

PvP will be scarce on the beastmen world. Not impossible, but hard to do due to the debuffs players with an evil alignment suffer from the moment they set foot on the beastmen planet. Also, it’s hinted at that the beastmen will be buffed while on their own planet, further turning the gankers who do try into free loot. It’s an interesting approach for sure, give evil alignment players a way to enter the peaceful world to complete their characters, but debuff them to prevent them from laying waste to the world.

      UPDATE!

Added link to the knowledge system spotlight.

      1. DEVELOPMENT:

      • There will be a wipe after every time-limited testing phase. That includes beta testing phases.

      2. FORUM, HERO/GUILD PROFILES AND THE FOUNDATION:

      • The hero profile isn't the actual way you will create a character ingame.

      5. EXPLORATION AND SURVIVAL:

      • There will be recurring PvE events, especially on Arboreus.
      • Maps are unlocked with tools, but you don't create an actual tradeable map.

      7. COMBAT AND KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM:

      • Prometheus's response on cookie cutter builds.
      • A bit more info about what interactions with animals entails.
      • There's nothing inherently bad about a demon being cut off from a few level 3 abilities .

it is a good way to get word out still, though many people are disliking the kickstarter when it comes to video games

Well, kickstarter is an ambiguous animal. In one hand, it's risky, and investors are quite often let down. In the other, however, a rising number of good games, specifically some outstanding RPG's ;), are developed and released to masses thanks to that tool.
Transparency of the project is important here. As for Fractured, the dev team does communicate rather well, but to be trustworthy for a Kickstarter campaign, I'd personally like to see a working alpha build. It's not a lot to ask since developers are asking our money.
Yet another danger here is the studio trying to implement all the cool features and stucking in development, tweaking, polishing, and, sometimes, overhauling them entirely. It's the problem of creative process since people were able to revise their creations.

I have the feeling these devs planned this a lot better than most devs I've seen. Take the UI pics in the latest spotlight for example. The UI already looks pretty finished and the idea they have for the knowledge system seems solid enough that it won't need a rework later down the road. I don't think we'll see an alpha build since alpha is planned for 2018, but they did say they want to show gameplay during the Kickstarter if possible.

As for the Knowledge system, including talents and abilities, it's actually pretty simple as an idea. The main concern of mine here is balancing issues. With total freedom of customisation, it's incredibly difficult not to end up with a few viable builds, when thit very freedom becomes meaningless.

That was also a concern of mine. This is what Prometheus had to say about it: https://forum.fracturedmmo.com/topic/222/the-knowledge-system-and-cookie-cutter-builds

      One more question:

Since you have to go to other planets to unlock higher levels of the abilities, how does that work for evil players going to Arborius? Are there tasks that require them to go to the areas that are too hard to reach for players of a certain alignment?
