What I have understood, Everquest Next had punch of a really good or even revolutionary ideas, but all of that were getting technically just too complex to implement in practise. I am not saying this was the only reason, but at least one of them.

Here is one short article related what happened with Everquest Next:

@dawnofcrow If they had been able to pull off even half of what they were "trying" to put into EQ Next, they would have cornered the market quite heavily. I think it is one of the next logical steps in any sandbox style game.

This is kind of what Ashes of Creation is trying to accomplish with their node system. Zones will evolve and change based on player actions, and this contains also behaviour of NPCs, animals, creatures and mobs.

I just leave this article here..

"Dynamight Studios is a financially stable company. Careful business planning, coupled with backing from the three founders and private investors, make us feel safe about the future of the project. Moreover, we already have open channels with a few large game publishers that have shown interest in Fractured."

Welcome and it was smart to start with the spotlight series. All newcomers should start from the news section to get a really good base knowledge of the game.

    • RE: Disappointed

@Jetah That sounds kind of far-fetched reason tbh. It is more like that line between alpha and beta scales and there is not just one clear point to separate these two phases from each other. In Albion there was still more content in beta than in alpha, so there was nothing wrong with the naming.

    • RE: Trade caravans...?

Ashes of Creation is going to implement a very detailed caravan system, it would be one option to follow up progression of what IS is doing and take few tips from there into the Fractured. However, in Ashes the caravan system will be one of the core features why it will also be a huge resource sink. I am not saying DS should just copy IS caravan system, but more like take some ideas from there if needed. Leaving caravans for players is also fine and working like in Albion, and maybe that is the good place to start with.

Too often now a days people forget that alphas are actually meant to test things, not be an early release.

Actually this depends of the games itself, which is why people have different experiences and opinions. For example Albion's "winter alpha" was totally playable (not just minor feature testing) and some testers liked that actually more than the official launch version.

@Pwnstar said in to the developers:

@Tuoni Yeah, I'm not sure what he's going on about. Blame the company, not the engine. Unity is fine for purpose.

I have no experience of Legends of Aria or Citadel Studios behind that game, but still I would not blame the engine itself, rather those developers who are using it.

    • RE: to the developers

A lot of games have used or uses Unity engine, so it can not be that bad. Even if some companies struggles with the Unity engine, that does not automatically mean it is Unity's fault.. I have played a lot of Albion Online and I do not remember a single negative feedback related of Unity engine or had any bad experience of myself.. 🤔 So I do not personally mind DS using Unity at all. 😉

    • RE: Trade caravans...?

One option is to left caravan activity just for players. At least guilds can easily arrange caravan with high carrying capacity mounts/carts and guards.

However somekind of transport/contract/insurance system would also be interesting where players could do caravan activities behalf others for money.

    • RE: Guild UI/management

Customable ranks and permissions are really nice to have. Guild bank system is really important to implement well and maybe something what guilds can upgrade with time. It will need several customable tabs with permissions. One very important tool is logs, which tolds who took out/put in what and when. Albion did not have any of these guild QoL features at the time of release and it was a nightmare to try management the item economy. It burned some officers pretty fast, when placing one chest for every member in different guild islands and then creating a map from that and keep it also updated just to keep track who has contributed.. 🤦

    • RE: Real Crafting

@Gothix and @Roccandil Now you understood me wrong. I do not want either finished products on loot tables in game where player crafting is one of the main cores, unless those are player crafted. That does not mean loot tables needs to be empty...

      @Farlander said in Real Crafting:

I like special loot dropping even if it is purely cosmetic decorative items for your house or special blueprints that let you craft one item.

These are good examples of what loot tables can contain on top of currency and common resources. Rare resources are also good motivators on top of cosmetics. If you can not craft something by yourself from those rare resources, then maybe you can sell those for good profit.

    • RE: Real Crafting

@Roccandil with secret chest and treasures has the problem, that those are secret maybe once and it totally excludes rare drop mechanics. With RNG there can be several random spawning locations with random loot, so why not use system like that if it works about 1000 times better?

Also RNG is a core element of RPGs, so I would leave chess away from this. 😉

Finally, I am sure that most of the MMORPG players wants to see RNG elements in the game. Without that the game will become really boring and predictable pretty fast.

It is also important to take account that RNG will eventually turn almost (with some tolerance ofc) to static number when sampling is high enough. So in short run anything can happen, but with long run the numbers will settle close to average.

Actually no... that's the point of RNG, it is always RNG, and there is an actual RNG chance that some player will always have good results, while other player will always have bad results (or most of the time).

This is what I hate about RNG. Specific players benefiting only on luck, while others having poor results most of the time.

I much prefer when player effort (and brain) are the sole factors in players success rate.

Actually yes. You should check probability calculation (like I mentioned in earlier post) and how it works. There is no just thing that some people get always bad results and some good.

I was wondering, how loot drops can be done without any RNG? Critical hit chances? Parry chances? Dodge chance? Damage scale? Resist chances? So without any RNG involved you can make the most boring and static combat seen ever. 😉

    • RE: Real Crafting

I am not a huge fan of RNG either, however, without any RNG game can be really unsurprising as well. I would say it is more like how RNG will be used. All kind of loot tables are based on RNG and also critical hits for example, and I do not see any problems there.

RNG can spice up a little crafting too so it won't become extremely static and boring. If RNG can cause negative effects or even destroy the product in process, that is ofc something what most people hate for sure. However, if RNG can make you create a better quality item or save some materials in the process, then the RNG is not so bad. Especially in situation where crafter can have influence to the RNG percentage with crafting experience and proper tools.

It is also important to take account that RNG will eventually turn almost (with some tolerance ofc) to static number when sampling is high enough. So in short run anything can happen, but with long run the numbers will settle close to average. Meaning if you have +30% chance to craft a good quality sword. You might be lucky with first attempts and get even 3/5 good quality swords or even 0/5 if you are unlucky. However, after 100 attempts you will averagely get 30/100 good swords based on probability calculations.

You can craft a bed in the wild and use that to logout instantly.

This sounds interesting. Is this bed something you can carry with you? I presume that you can not use bed when you are in combat right?
