Would be great if you manage to get funds before the Kickstarter so that you can push it back a little because that would mean you would be able to get the game further in development before trying to sell it for a larger crowd. The more you have to show the more interest it gets in KS in my experience. Ashes of Creation did something like that and got almost $3.3M which is the best any MMO has done so far IIRC.

      Indeed - that's exactly what we're aiming at! 🙂

Just a question, when you say "you get one out of 8 possible skins" ? Does it mean, when you open a chest, you have the choice between 8 different skins ? (maybe my translation is wrong ^^

You get a random one among the 8 possible. If you open another chest of the same type you won't get the same skin again 🙂

@dagimir said in Slow combat vs Fast combat:

a quick spamfest like diablo 3? Clearing whole maps in a matter of minutes

Although Fractured has a combat system inspired to classic actions RPGs, there will be no "spamfest" whatsoever. The ARPG inspiration is mostly visible when it comes to game controls and the fact there is no auto-attack, attacks and projectiles can be dodged (no target follow), spells are skillshots (besides a few exceptions), etc. This makes combat very dynamic - and sometimes hectic because monsters are generally dangerous and able to use several different abilities themselves, so there's a lot of moving and a lot of strategizing to do at the same time.

Of course you have to take our words for this, because that doesn't show much in the pre-alpha videos. It will be already a thing in Alpha 1 (which is anyway more focused on crafting/building than combat), and will grow over the course of Alpha.

    • RE: A Delicate Question: Slavery

That's a very interesting question you have here, @Fyrsey. NPC "slavery" is not a planned feature as of today.

NPCs will play a big role in Fractured - guilds will be able to attract them to their villages / towns, where they can settle and start their own businesses. They'll have proper names, be more or less skilled in different activities and - to an extent - have different personalities.

Reducing all of this to "slavery" (à la Conan Exiles) would downplay the whole system a lot 😉

      @firefiite said in Magic:

So from what I have gathered so far, the combat system is akin to ARPGs like Diablo and the like. Also in the landing page for the website I see a wizard freezing water, so my question is, will the magic system be something similar to what Magicka has? For example, mixing an earth element and a fire element will create a fireball that explodes on impact.

Hi Fire! No, not really. The fact you can interact with the environment (and with the effects of other spells, too), doesn't mean that the way you cast them will resemble the Magicka series. The uniqueness of our system lies in how you learn the spells and what they can do!

Hi @Yentlyn  This is probably not the answer you want to hear, but, as @Vengu pointed out, building in Fractured will indeed be quite close to what you've called "prop-based". You'll be able to customize your constructions, but only through pre-made assets.

We've decided to take this approach so we can focus more on other areas of gameplay where we think we can truly innovate the genre. Hop you'll give Fractured a chance anyway - there's a lot more to it than customizing your own home / plot of land!

@jetah said in Going Worldwide - Regional Servers & Localization:

I don't them wasting the funding to host multiple servers while in Alpha - Beta.

It makes no difference to have one or more servers with SpatialOS. It's all usage-based. Also, we'll be in the Games Innovation Program once we're funded, so we won't have to pay server expenses for a while anyway 🙂

@vortech said in Going Worldwide - Regional Servers & Localization:

here are some resources from David Salz the CTO of SBI

Interesting, thanks. I gave them a look. If you check out the "Berlin QUO Vadis" one, you'll see it says what I told you in my previous post: they're now hosting the whole game in a single datacenter (where the server is, you can figure out just by searching it on their forums: US East).

The whole server architecture of Albion I knew already overall. It's robust and they've optimized it exceptionally well, but it's essentially the simplest kind possible:

      • Game world divided in clear-cut regions with no interaction possible between two players in different regions
      • Each region controlled by one thread (/ one server process)

The SpatialOS backend architecture is more sophisticated: I could be in front of you in the game, and both of us could be controlled by different server processes. This is, in a nutshell, why we can afford to have an open world and why in the same 1km x 1km area of this open world there could be 2 or 2000 players.

Notwithstanding all this goodness, latency is still latency. If you're in the US and you're in front of a player from China, it takes 300ms for your actions to reach him. There's literally no way out of that besides making optical fiber cables where signal travels at the nominal speed of light, but that's something not available to humanity as of today 🙂

@logain said in Going Worldwide - Regional Servers & Localization:

Is there any chance that you could elaborate a bit on the metrics you're going to use for this decision? (For example, are you going to look at total amount of player, at concurrent players, at peak times/low times, at the distribution of Beast/Human/Demon,...)

A mix of all. Concurrent players during the day are of course one of the most important factors.

I know that developing a game in a small team is requiring pretty much all the time of the day. I was hoping anyway if we can have some little pills each week about something in the art, sounds, animations. Some little things that will hold up a bit of hype and connection between devs and us. Just a thread\two rows and a screen\sound\animation ecc

We've been toying with this idea ourselves for a while now, and I guess it's about time we make it a thing. I'm going to open a screenshots/"pills" section on Discord and/or a forum thread after I publish the new update today/tomorrow 🙂

    • RE: Unity and its downsides

Hi @Lomacil  I don't get what you're referring to as "draw call limits of Unity". There is no "rule of thumb" for draw calls - you need to optimize according to several factors in your average game scenario (expected number of objects on the screen, poly count, weight of textures, etc) and the minimum CPU/GPU requirements you're aiming for.

As of today, the pre-alpha build of Fractured runs above 30 FPS* in averagely crowded scenarios even on our worst testing machine - a 5 years old laptop (CPU: i5-2410M - GPU: GeForce GT 540M) which was worth $500 back then and is probably worth $150 now. And we haven't started optimizing yet (obviously: optimization always comes a lot later in development).

So... yeah, I don't get the question "how is it possible to play it in the end?" either 🙂

*I'm obviously talking low quality settings here. A 2-years old $700 desktop PC runs the same scenario at 150+ FPS on high quality settings.

@Vengu apologies for the super-slow reply. That's a very interesting question, and one we're still experimenting on.

One thing we're very set on is that floods of hostile creatures and senseless attack spamming are not our thing. In general, our orientation is to have a more "strategic" combat than the average ARPG - mixing the hectic fun of the genre with the tactical depth of the MOBA genre. This on course means fewer enemies and an overall slower pace - but still perfectly suitable for a PoE fan, since you've mentioned it

@boogis said in Aminal Tamer as a Class:

I have read your Q&A about mounts and im very disapointed. Im not the one who give mentored advices to DEVs but i try to use common sense. What you guys have said about mounts is complitly copy of Albion Online,.
You said that mount is disapearing after you get off it. Its very unrealistic, it would be much better if mount would not be able to put in inventory like a some sort of item. Mount is mount. It will be better if it will never dissapear and it will always had to stay in a world and if you got off mount it will be always standind where you left it untill some one killed it. yes!! killed it. mount like a players. good player? good mount. bad player bad mount. you killed it? then deal with karma issues.

Hi boogis! The first iteration of mounts is going to work in that "simplified" way simply because it's quick to make (budget matters!) and because we won't have animal taming yet. It's not intended to stay like that forever.

As you can see, animal taming is one of our stretch goals. Being a stretch goal means it's not a core feature of the game, but one we'd love to see nonetheless. If unlocked, we're going to work on it later on in the development cycle - perhaps in late alpha, perhaps in beta. Once that's completed, you'll be able to tame pets, issue them orders and of course attack other people's pets. That will include mounts!

@boogis said in Aminal Tamer as a Class:

Also fight on mounts its a lot of fun but if you put it right. maybe if you sit on mounts you cannot use your special abilities but only auto-attacks. so it can be simple kick from warrior simple shot from archer and simpliest spell from mage or even just a staff strike. why you complitly decline this possiablity? game should be more very.

It's very, very unlikely we're ever going to have mounted combat for several reasons - the two largest ones being it would require a lot of work (particularly on the animation side) and that it would be a balancing nightmare. All our combat is designed and balanced to be between walking characters, and trust me we have a ton of more important features to develop than mounted combat which is really out of the scope of the game 🙂
