@mazikar said in Unity has blocked SpatialOS - What's up and what it means for us:

It is looking less and less like this will have anything to do with Fractured. Looks more like in fighting and posturing with another developer. It should all be over soon.

See something new? I agree with the posturing.. but I'm not seeing the other stuff you mentioned.

The whole retroactive thing sort of blows my mind, but he's right, newer articles are showing that Unity wanted something and didn't really want to shut these things down. In the end it should get worked out and things should be fine again.

Unity has said World's Adrift was okay and won't need to be taken down. I don't know who they talked to in order to get Unity to say this, maybe someone at Fractured can reach out and talk to them as well.

Another game using the two together (Lazarus by Split Milk) at first took their game down being worried, but brought it back up two hours later and said they're going to keep going until someone forces them to take it down. They found out that they were going to be able to keep the game up, as per their tweets, so there's another game that thought they were going to be affected that turned out to be just fine.

The latest tweet by Split Milk says this: "People and companies who we have no influence over have created events that led to us being told that we'd have to shut the Lazarus servers down.

It turns out this was not true."

So they are just fine now.

Epic/Unreal and Improbable also have committed $25 million to help developers get out of this mess, so if Fractured is stuck in this mess, hopefully they'll get a chunk of that cash to help them get out of it. And yet if these other companies are fine, I think that means Fractured will be fine as well.

There was some confusion with the wording of what Unity was saying and doing, and there are other things happening behind the scenes that we didn't really know about. Unity isn't entirely to blame. Someone else put it like this:

"Unity requires that anyone who qualifies as a “platform” (SpacialOS is exactly this) become liscenced by Unity as such, Improbable said “nah, that is ok: we are just fine without one, but thanks for asking” for 2 years.

So, if you run your own unity project on your own server, then you are not a platform (note that this is about back end server software for you game, not the physical hardware your server files are installed on).

But if you make a generic server program and then sell it to other development teams to run their games without having to go through the work of building their own server, then you are a “Platform.”

Which is exactly what SpacialOS was.

Unity told them mutiple times to get with the program (the same program that lots if other “platform” suppliers have signed up with) and Improbable wouldn’t do it.

So Unity revoked their rights to be a Unity Developer."

It's something that SpacialOS can work out with them. SpacialOS is claiming they didn't get the emails or notifications over the past two years, that their dog ate their homework and their little brother deleted their emails, but in the end they'll work it out. Unity wanted them to get with the program, not actually shut these games down.

I'm confident all will be worked out in the end, as other games have said they are fine and were simply led to believe they had to shut down when they really did not need to.

    • RE: This game is a potential PVE gold mine

      @Needlehawk

I'm definitely going to be living on Arboreus, though who knows, some time on Syndesia may beckon me as well depending on a number of factors.

I'd like the word to get out too! It seems this game is still a bit under the radar. I'd like for a lot more people to find out about it, and for a lot more people to back it as well since that will give us more content.

I'd love to see them get a big cash infusion that would push a lot more development even if that did mean major delays while it was done.

This game has so many cool things planned, I guess we need to help their voice be heard over the loads of garbage floating around out there.

Anyway I'm here mostly for the PvE as well. I have seen a few other attempts at it that haven't really been executed well at all. I'm really hoping this game is going to be the one that ends up changing all that.

I'm already supporting it but hope to be able to raise my backer status up some tiers in time. I can't wait, but I'm willing to wait.

    • RE: Cross-gender playing

I am a female player, and I have a really difficult time playing a male in an MMORPG type of online game and still being able to enjoy myself.

I've tried it a few times - although usually more out of what I felt was a necessity at the time than much else, or in games that were gender locked.

My few times cross-gender playing for a bit more of some extended times in online games was mostly when I was younger. It was when I was playing certain games and wanted to be left alone in situations where I wasn't being left alone, or to hide from certain people. I was too shy and timid and worried about over politeness to really just tell them off like I should have at the time.

I have never got enjoyment out of it, however. I have tried, but it's our "avatar" - it's us, it is the person whose life we are living and creating. If it's the specific story of a specific person, that's different. I'm good playing whatever that person or thing may be in that instance. But not in multiplayer online games especially where it's my representation.

I dislike cross-gender playing so much that in gender locked games I will skip playing a class I'd much rather be if they only have male versions of them. While it's a bit hard to explain, It just feels funny and wrong to me to play males in online games that I'm making my own story. I mean it just doesn't feel natural or fun to me at all.

So yeah, it basically kills my fun playing cross-gender in online games. I will give it a try every once and a while when in certain gender locked situations, but it always gives me that same feeling where I'm not really enjoying myself.

    • RE: Open Alpha 2 Weekend & Test Extension

The server had to be taken down. Please try not to be too upset, we're here to test issues and stress the server. An issue came up that is affecting the server that needs to be fixed. Testers are helpful and appreciated by the game companies, but we're here to help test right now not for just getting to play a game. Obviously most of us know that, I'm speaking to a few specific people that are overly upset.

Some people being so mad about the server having to go down in early testing is semi-ridiculous (swearing and saying you won't buy the game etc, silly things. Though I really hope the threats are true because we're better off without those kind of people around).

    • RE: Are you a PVP or PVE player?

I don't enjoy PvP in MMORPGs the majority of the time. Normally in MMORPGs the person who can spend the most time online is the strongest and it's very rarely a fair fight. I can't compete with time based power, I just don't have that much time to be on a game gaining it.

Personally I feel that a lot of skilled PvP players play games that equalize everybody and take real skill rather than just overpowering somebody because you've been building up in the game longer than they have. It's why there are so many gankers in MMORPGs, a great many of the people who want an actual PvP contest get their PvP elsewhere where things are more equal. We get a lot of leftover people who want to gank people lower than they are and mess with people who don't want to be involved in PvP at all. I know that's not all of them obviously, but we get a lot like that.

Saying most people enjoy PvP is not true. Most MMORPGs that have separate PvP and PvE servers have far far greater population on the PvE servers (this isn't always the case but usually). There is a far greater PvE population of MMORPG players than PvP.

I'm hoping the PvE here is done right where they don't try to lure us into PvP zones by putting the best resources there or something so the PKers have people to gank. It seems despite these games having more PvE players than PvP players they often lean towards trying to keep the PvP players happy and giving them people to kill who don't want to be involved in PvP by putting stuff in PvP zones that can't be got elsewhere, the best loot, quests, the best monsters or bosses, etc. And that isn't that fun for people looking for a PvE experience.

There are so many games out though, that they can do whatever they want and we'll just either play or not based on what they choose to do. I'd rather they did a good PvE job so I could stay here and enjoy playing (and in fact it's the only reason I'm here because I read an article saying no forced PvP), but if they don't I'll just go elsewhere to one of the tons of other games out there rather than stick around squawking trying to get things changed 😸

      @fibs
deer taste pretty good. deer jerky is delicious.

i just don't like the whole 'gender' thing being thrown in my face. it's a video game. gender doesn't change performance.

It very much does change the enjoyment of the game for a lot of people. Being a female, I really don't relate to male characters that well.

If I'm playing the story of someone else, a game about a specific person, I could care less. That is their story that I'm experiencing. I love stories, and if it happens to be about a specific male or female or other, I'm completely happy experiencing the story through their eyes.

If I'm playing an online game with a character that is representing "me" - a character that I either get into the role as playing or simply just the character I am building the story and life for - I relate far more and get much more enjoyment out of playing a female character.

Feminine or masculine characteristics are something you can see. They absolutely do have a gender one way or the other (and yes, there is gender neutral as well).

This also was a simple playful question someone was messing around with just asking people which they'll choose. There was no reason for hostility levels to increase or debates to ensue! 🐱

    • RE: This game is a potential PVE gold mine

It does seem more polarized most of the time with people either looking to play Beastmen or Demons. My main character will definitely be on Arboreus, but I probably will try out a Syndesia alt.

I don't really mind that I may have to go off world to get some stuff, or trade with people that do? I just want my main overall home experience to be PvE, and to mostly only deal with PvP on my terms when I'm ready. I can deal with it occasionally otherwise, just I don't want it to be an all the time looking over the shoulder thing.

@needlehawk said in This game is a potential PVE gold mine:

Thanks everyone for weighing in! Obviously I disagree with a lot of the analysis here, but that's what discussions are for. 🙂 I'm not sure that I always understand the viewpoint of everyone here, but there's a few points that people are making that I'd like to address.

First, a few people seem to have the assumption that PVE'ers are looking mostly for dev created content, as well as raids and dungeons. I couldn't disagree more. I know that I am utterly sick of dev created content, and am REALLY looking forward to exploring, crafting, etc. in a world where I'm not on rails. I've been wanting to play a sandbox for a long time, but every single developer except this one apparently thinks that only PVP'ers want a sandbox. I LOATHE being attacked and interrupted when I'm trying to accomplish something in game, so I've simply avoided those game.

Yes when I replied talking about how I agree and will love the PvE here, I wasn't thinking of Raids or Dungeons etc, I was thinking of being able to play an actual MMORPG Sandbox on a PvE world. A real MMORPG PvE sandbox, not one of the limited multiplayer ones that people host their own small worlds that are making the rounds now.

Arboreus is a potential PvE goldmine for people looking for a PvE sandbox experience. Some of those replying and disagreeing seem to be people who either don't like PvE that much to begin with or who think we're looking for a scripted raid experience, which isn't what either of us meant. I got what you were saying, because I'm looking for the same type of experience 😸
