    • RE: Feature Spotlight #6 - PvP, Alignment & Crime

I've pondered if I should respond to the thread again, since the decision has already been taken when the developers wrote the spotlight, so the argument is moot, but given that people happily keep beating the already buried horse, I'm just going to shrug and try to explain my points.

@vengu said in Feature Spotlight #6 - PvP, Alignment & Crime:

(...)There are plenty of PvE MMOs where botters get punished(...)

@prometheus said in Feature Spotlight #6 - PvP, Alignment & Crime:

(...)By "not being gentle" I meant we'll run both scripted and manual controls, systematically. We'll get as sophisticated as we can(...)

My point was not that the botting accounts wouldn't receive a punishment, but that the benefit of botting would be far more valuable than the drawback of potentially loosing the account at a point in time where there is a net gain. That's the reason you have 'gold sellers' in that kind of games after all, they make a profit (else they wouldn't be taking that business venture), because it takes a considerable amount of time till the limited resources of the game development company can detect and act on the bot (it's a simple 'brute force'-problem, that can only be tackled through applying an equally high amount of resources and there is only one such amount of cheap resources in an MMORPG, players). The idea I was 'promoting' is not that of punishing bot accounts for the sake of punishment or justice, but to prevent them from turning in profit, because that is the only way to stop a business, making it unprofitable.

@prometheus said in Feature Spotlight #6 - PvP, Alignment & Crime:

(...)It has a better grasp of Arboreus-specific resources, which are different from the ones of Syndesia and Tartaros  Since there's no hostile PvP on Arboreus, I don't get what you mean by "easy retreat" - if you're doing PvP on Syndesia with a Beastman you have no advantage compared to Demons and Humans. If you're doing it on Tartaros, you're heavily penalized compared to Demons and quite penalized compared to Humans. Last but not least, you're cut off town conquest. I'd definitely say Beastman is the worst race if you want to PvP, as it's meant to be

@finland said in Feature Spotlight #6 - PvP, Alignment & Crime:

(...)Why should Tartaros be empty? to me looks silly to say that. Tartaros should be like an giant Open Wolrd Arena. All PvPers should play there(...)

That's a very complex topic, I'm going to try and tackle it in little steps.
First assumption, PvP players are likely to be competitive.
Second assumption, competitive players usually prefer to be at an advantage (or equal), but try to avoid being at a disadvantage when it comes to meta-gaming.
Third assumption, there's plenty of games on the market that specifically carter to and design for the competitive PvP player (MOBAs, FPS, RTS), so you have to provide unique incentive if you want them to play your game. Just telling them 'PvP for the sake of PvP' ain't going to convince them to pay for your product, why should it?
Forth assumption, playing at a constant risk of being killed and looted is a lot more 'difficult' then playing without that risk, both because you can specifically target a specific set of counter-abilities/equipment in PvE and you never have to worry about overextending, so you can easily generate a better productivity for your invested time by reducing the traveling back and forth overhead. (If that would not be the case, the 'PvE only people' wouldn't complain about PvP to begin with)

    • RE: Coming from CoE

@Recoil said in Coming from CoE:

(...) you'll have to wait a while before full release(...)

That was a main part of the problem with CoE though. Telling people the game would release in a year and a half, then nothing, telling people the game would now release in 2 more years and again nothing tangible (other then 'web events' and a parkour single player demo at the very end). The Fractured roadmap told people flat out they'd have to wait for a good while and there is a 'basic game' to test right now (with Alpha 2 access).

That said, I fully understand the issues CoE had, as it is far, far easier to display curated content than it is to display procedural generated content in what people consider a reasonable amount of time.

@vengu said in To hype or not to hype?:

I would wait until we have more information. There really isn't all that much to talk about yet.

And even then it's a matter of actual implementation. Design and concept leave a lot of room for personal preferences.

@phaethonas said in First Fractured Gameplay Video Released!:

(...)I noticed that there is friendly fire (yahoo!). In case grouping is possible, is friendly fire possible for players within the group?(...)

I'm not sure, but I think we have a different definition of 'friendly fire'? When arrows/ice beam/ice spray/AoE jump damage would have 'hit' the other player, he didn't seem to take damage, did he? Only once targeted, he took damage and that's not friendly fire, that's intentionally attacking (though with a 'miss-click')?
Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to have friendly fire (it's way too easy without, as you could see in the video just walking through killing everything in the way), but I thought the PvE/PvP thread mentioned friendly fire won't exist?

(...)You can group and that removes friendly fire too. We might reconsider this decision though.

Can you 'define' friendly fire? Normally, the term would indicate that if a third person gets in the line of fire between you and the target, the ray/projectile/hit no longer hits the target, but that third person. How could you do that in a game with free targeting (you can freeze a river, so you need to be able to aim at said river...), while keeping your 'only consensual PvP - mantra'? If I can aim anywhere and deal damage to anything in that line (friendly fire), I could easily kill a Beastman as Beastman?

I think that Demon can do their job by killing beastmen and humans on Tartaros ;). Or we could get something like Demons can kill Demons

Demons can kill demons, but that requires... player interaction. You can not interact with somebody who's safely hiding in their own instance.

@kellewic said in Kickstarter Update - Pledge Packs:

(...)By this logic buying into alpha/beta is p2w since you gain game experience before others(...)

Which is a mute point, since the lowest package already grants you beta 2 access, so by the time the game starts you could in theory have gained all 'player knowledge' you need. VIP gains are a completely different beast though.

Yes, I think prices are fair.

I am looking for either an early bird recruit, early bird founder, or early bird patron. I have not finalized my decision yet.

I don't think anything is missing and I have no preference on the inclusion of Foundation points.

I strongly dislike the VIP service and the carpenter. I know you do not consider them pay to win, but that is what they boil down to in the end. You mentioned yourself in your Q&A that a person with one build could dominate a person with a different (counter) build of same player skill. So having access to these builds can make or break a fight for somebody. The VIP service/carpenter - pay to win issue together with the 'large PvE only areas' make me want to pledge less, but your investment and willingness to answer people make me want to pledge more. I'm torn.

Understandable, and there is risk. But I'm fond of saying that if you want innovation you gotta take chances. That goes for designers as well as the people funding them.

    • Clarification on the target audience

While we've gotten some nice design journals and we know the 'general classification' of Fractured as an open world MMORPG with a MOBA influence, most everybody seems to have a divergent idea on the general target audience for the game. As a result of this, the suggestions on what would be good or bad design for the game (and the expectations on the game) are very different (meaning that some people would have to be inevitably disappointed). Would it be possible for you to select some 'core design pillars' that clearly lay out a vision for a specific target audience @Prometheus (and mention how your specific features and functionality enforce that idea in future design journals)?

(...)why it absolutely doesn't affect the "competitive power"(...)

When explaining that, could you please elaborate (include) how the bonus effect on attributes won't play a role there? As far as I understood, you gain these trough talents, which you'd gain (faster) through being VIP?
'Most bonuses given by an attribute grow exponentially with the score of the attribute – that is, points allocated from 20 to 25 are far more effective than points allocated from, say, 10 to 15(...)'
'Furthermore, reaching a Natural Score of 20 with each attribute grants an additional unique bonus to the character(...)'
      '(...)powerful boost to melee damage'
      '(...)powerful boost to evasion ratings'
      '(...)significant boost to Mana regeneration'
'(...)slowly regenerate Life over time without external intervention'
'(...)significant boost to its accuracy rating'
      '(...)significant boost to its luck'

      Thank you in advance!

Btw. you shouldn't expect as much as 'playing the game', but rather 'testing some mechanics' during these Alpha tests. Yes, you can already enjoy PARTS of the game, but you are likely to encounter issues and plenty of functionality simply isn't there yet, which can have a considerable impact on your play experience. I'm not trying to discourage you, the very opposite would be true, but I'd rather set expectations right.

The main objective of this is to doing this infinitely

'Fractured is neither level-based nor skill-based, and strongly rejects grinding in any form'
There is an endgame, without actually being an endgame, simply because 'your character rarely becomes stronger over time. Instead, it gets more knowledgeable. This happens is many ways, but one above all: the array of abilities at its disposal becomes larger and larger'
