    • RE: Are you a PVP or PVE player?

@evolgrinz Aye, the biggest thing for me is that I get disgusted by the whole trash talking stuff (not disturbed so I lose any edge as so many of the proponents say they do it for). I just don't really care to be around that. So I play less there, and contribute less funds. The only people who really get anything out of the result of that trash talk around me, are those who cheer for PvP based games to fail and die.

So instead of playing PvP as often, I started looking for other things to enjoy. I still have fun going out and kicking butt (or getting my butt kicked) depending on things, but... if there was less of the annoying crap that I dislike in those regards I'd be more likely to do so more frequently.

As to open world PvP, and the tendencies toward ambushes and attacking people with severe disadvantages in MMOs, I find that less in good fun. At the same time, I know that's what some people enjoy. So, as usual, my goal around that is to promote the idea of diverse games (AKA, instead of every open world PvP game having no rules, pushing for a mixture of different ideas that leave games for those who like the no-rules PvP but also games where there are rules of engagement). I believe there are many who refuse to play PvP games at all, due solely to the entire push for no-rules. Because, as most anyone who has experience with that setup understands, it provides every benefit to those who wish to hunt down others for whatever reason, and leaves no real chance for anything else (because anything else being done is just a target).

    • RE: The Tides of PVP

The single best method to this is complex political and economic concerns. In short, without there being negatives to war there is no reason not to war.

I picture the following scenario as the ideal way that avoids this: You have groups 1-6 here. Group 1 wants to fight a war. Group 2 is nearby, and a potential target. However, Group 2 shelters Group 3 from Group 1, and Group 3 provides a key resource in trade that Group 1 really needs and is not getting elsewhere. Group 4 is also a potential target with a border. It has relations with Groups 5 and 6, but those are only trade based and attacking would not lead to issues with supply or create border threats toward them.

Group 1 decides to fight Group 4. They fight for a while, but once a critical point in the fighting is reached Groups 2, 5, and 6 all step in for their own interests. After a while of combat, some of the group maybe have a little territory gained or lost, but they all need some time to rebuild stocks and prepare more weapons, armors, etc. So the fighting winds down for a while.

The keys to this are: Interests of various groups not being best suited by mega-grouping for the wins, complex economic factors and stocking up goods not being too easy, and benefits to the economic production when things are relatively peaceful (an easy example is that craft focused people left as war starts up need to continue work, but have bandits and monsters interfere and cannot do nearly as much as normal).

How feasible all that is, and how forgiving players are to the limitations thus created, is a giant question at this point.

    • RE: Any Alpha Testers

Put bluntly, there is no Alpha yet. Once Alpha is out, there will be no NDA and people will be sharing stuff.

Pre-Alpha is under NDA, and nobody who gets access is likely to want to run into trouble with outing themself as a tester or breaking NDA.

@esher That's actually an interesting comparison, since they are technically corrupted Angels. With the Demon->Angel transformation in game...

    • RE: Foundation quest : Newsletter

@owlsanegaming Yeah, was about to say that! I was here among the first handful of people on the Foundation, so pretty sure 34 is the max. Which matches the total number of blogs.

Anyway, good luck on getting the points for this. Either way, just enjoy the rewards you get from the Foundation as a bonus bit of fun!

    • RE: Ruined mines

Could be an interesting idea. I'd think that mines could be deep enough to be mini-dungeon status. Whether we get to a point where they go deep enough to be a Mines of Moria type experience is a whole nother topic imo!

    • RE: Question about Patron pledge Pack

I do not believe name reservations are open yet. I believe the actual name reservations will be tied to either a period shortly before launch, or slightly before beta, depending upon what the studio wishes to do.

Those are classically the times when name reservations are applied.

    • RE: Foundation quest : Newsletter

Yeah, I'm missing about 9 of them. That part of the system is a little wonky. Not that I think it's a really big deal, the fact they made the foundation at all is pretty cool.

I wonder if it has anything to do with being logged out (as in not remembered via either choice or the timed reset) of the website when we first open them?

    • RE: Instance/Non-Instance

@jetah Yeah, Target linked the appropriate info, but in general asteroids are more of a space where they can do different limited time things it seems. So anything from PvP events to odd PvE or PvX Holiday asteroids could be possible.

    • RE: Immortal Pledge "Access to developer forums" highlight

@manaia Most likely the devs are busy with pre-alpha and getting everything ready still, and the others are correct (just adding my own thoughts in support of that). So odds of them showing up at a thread right now are probably a little less, due to the demands upon their time.

Anyway, it shouldn't be too long until we hear about it!

    • RE: Instance/Non-Instance

Yeah, the Labyrinth is the only thing I expect to be instanced here. Asteroids are fully covered in being 'instanced' only in that they are separate from the normal worlds. AKA, everyone who goes to an asteroid should be able to see each other.

I do expect they will have some timing with asteroids and/or different asteroids for different purposes though. For example, there might be one that anyone can access (expect PvP). There might also be one that only beast-people or their visitors could access. Etc.

    • RE: Preventing Bots in Arboreus

@whisper The debuff being one player based and toggled by that player means it will be abused. Not a good idea.

Now, allowing the player involved click through to remove it... might seem acceptable, however that just means that some people will essentially spam abuse them to annoy (grief) others.

Sadly, there isn't a really good shortcut option (that I have seen work) that doesn't involve misery for legitimate players.

    • RE: The Fractured Pre-Alpha Is Coming!

@grofire I agree that it could possibly be something with favortism, but I remain in the camp of needing pretty solid evidence to get outraged on it. I certainly won't badmouth anyone for complaining about it.

At the same time, I will note that unless our identities are tied to our online presence AND there is strict law enforcement around any problem behaviors... such things will be. That's the internet of today. It's not a good thing, although the other way is also not a good thing (there may be some middle balance, but in general government always take that too far).

As to nobody saying why some have been chosen above others, there was a developer post that they selected people they felt would be most helpful. That's not very detailed, of course. So you may find it isn't enough, and that's fine.

I believe a large part of why they are not saying more is an effort to maintain the integrity of the NDA. Those are typically a problem spot with leaks for many studios, and the more they reveal identities of people already going, the more pressure those people will get for leaks. That's just a hypothesis on my end as to why they might not have given more information about their selections and process, so don't take it as fact (I'm just offering something that seems logical to me).

    • RE: Mounts

Not that we have a lot of really solid information yet, but I would guess that mounts might be vulnerable to attack. Whether they need to be fed or not, and whether that's online time only, is a good question.

    • RE: My First Time. . .

@blacshonjak Alpha and Beta testing (done right) are interesting. The goal is to find things that work oddly, report them, and ideally have a method to reproduce them so they can be fixed.

It's still good fun in the game, although it is a little different. Think of it as trying to help make the game be the best it can be for launch, and you won't go wrong. Think of it as early time in the game for yourself, and it's pretty much just that (personally, that means that mindset is a wasted opportunity to help the developers and yourself both, but... that's my thoughts on it).

    • RE: [quest topic] Have fun playing to all who go into phase 1 of the invites.

@zidroc Rank isn't everything, just being active and thoughtful on the forums, or spreading the word, gives you a solid chance. Remember that they are doing waves of invites, so people don't even know for sure yet who all will be invited.

      Good luck!

    • RE: Pre-alpha server status notification

Agree that this is a good idea, and not just for pre-alpha. Testing at any point is often full of ups and downs for the servers as things need priority fixes. Having a simple system for this is a good thing. By simple, I mean it could be as little as an icon that is a different color depending on if the server is up or down.

Having that tied to something like the pre-alpha forum page wouldn't be too tough either, in my own experiences. Granted I haven't done a lot of web design, but even then I have done similar things.

To all, have fun breaking things!

Alpha meta-game is always in any game like having a virtual bull and a virtual china shop, and balancing between full destruction and really careful walks among broken dishes.

    • RE: Friendly Fire

      @jetah said in Friendly Fire:

Eve Online is a sandbox game

With a population that plays some 90% in high-sec. Where having those issues (outside scams) isn't really a concern for much of anything. Attacks in high-sec that are actually a threat are extremely rare, because it takes enough grinding to make it a pain in the butt.

Guess what, intended game mechanics is something I am talking about. Because right now shots seem to travel in a line, and there seems to be some collision, all of which means a random person can maliciously force themselves into distanced attacks that have AOE to harm people in a way that is completely against the intended game mechanics (unless the game mechanics are intended to be 'go be a completely PvP unflagged person who tries to get people flagged for murder) with good (and neutral to an extent) alignments.

I'm saying that needs to be a noted thing for the devs, and THEN they can remove the friendly fire protection on good. Because I really do think it is unfair, but simply removing it opens up the game to push everyone good to say either "Okay, Arboreus it is and forget Sydensia" or "Bad game, griefing alignment is normal."
