    • RE: The value of Information

For far too many people, CHAT fulfills the Socialization aspect of the game, and it is a main reason they play an MMORPG in the first place as opposed to a Solo game. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone plays MMOs for the Guild structure, raiding and shared dungeon experiences, sometimes they want to play solo, but have conversations in various chat channels with other players of the same game, on the same server.

This being the case, I seriously doubt that any MMO would gut themselves by removing global chat.

@Logain 15th is specifically Steam EA so Steam should be available right away, barring complications.

Asteroids had been pushed to around Tartarus patch last I heard, but roadway should say for sure.

Barring special testing sets, like the recent 3-4 day PvP mini-tests where you started with everything unlocked, All Alpha and Beta tests will start over from scratch each time, as per the Developers (Alphas for sure, some betas may let you continue) as different mechanics are being tested, and they need to be tested from the ground up.

    • RE: Closed Development Notice

      @HolyAvengerOne

Basically, about a year and a half ago, Improbable (the owners of SpatialOS acquired the Zeuz.ims Server management system and required all their users to switch to it. Then in January, Zeuz.ims was completely depricated, causing a lot of SpatialOS games to have to develop a new server backend pretty much on the fly. In the case of Dynamight Studios, what we were told was that they were in-house developing their own Server Backend. We were warned it was going down in Dec, and so they stopped sales of Fractured on Christmas Eve so no new players could acquire the game until the new Backend was in and tested.

    • RE: March Winter Alpha?

@GamerSeuss For Ultima Online, I can't really offer any proof this late in the game. If you happen upon an original EverQuest guide, and turn to the back where the credits are, you'll see Clyde Starr listed as a Beta Tester right there. Also, somewhere around this mess of a house, I also have a set of the programmers autographs on a piece of EverQuest stationary as well.

Regardless, I feel its not something I need to prove or disprove, because the nature of the beast is what we're talking about, and it is still valid that this is how Alphas and Betas are run. Granted, like I said, often, Alphas are closed or very limited invite list testing phases, often done by in-house testers or a professional benchmark group nowadays, but smaller publishers are starting to go with the open Alpha format because they get more backers AND more eyes on their product prior to it releasing to beta and the much less forgiving public. Alpha testers are supposed to realize going in that the game is far from complete and still open to much change. Beta is more set, and they are just ironing out bugs and adding in variable features that are less likely to cause major issues with the code/mechanics, and more QoL for the players for when the game goes live, so they can say the whole game was tested and they don't just spring something new into the game when it's live and nnobody has had a chance at it before.

I try really hard to stay away from FB these days....

I probably would too, unfortunately, I'm far too invested in the FB platform in my other endeavors. Just like how I have to have discord for a few things, even though I hate it, I have to have FB even more...I help run a local gaming convention (On the Board of Directors), I run the Biggest Karaoke Group on FB in my area, I run a FB group for Nerds with Pets, I run a Player/DM LFG group for Tabletop, Our Crafting and Editing side business has a FB page, The local gaming store where I'm a Store Sanctioned DM primarily uses a FB group, with Discord being the only backup (if given the choice, I will do FB over Discord, anyday), I have major health issues, and FB is how my Friends and Loved Ones keep up with my status in that regard, I'm involved with several other Gaming and Nerd gatherings/conventions, and finally, I'm a member of several Authors' groups where I network as an Author myself, and also solicit our Editing business.

Frankly, I'm kinda stuck with FB until like every other platform, it eventually fails. I was hopping Google Hangouts was going to take them down (was a MUCH cleaner system, in fact) but it just didn't catch on and couldn't take on the Juggernaut. Like with MySpace, FB will only go down if they actually have a server crash that keeps them offline for a week to 10 days, giving time for people to actively search out an alternate avenue for social media contact.

@Roccandil complex enough to be tough to code effectively, but very real, and the RPers out there would love something like this.

This brings the MMORPG closer to the true RPG of its roots, where what the PCs do in game can really matter, as well as what they don't do.

      goddess I hope not!

One of the selling points of this game is you can't just easily walk your way through stuff like that. Most Guilds if they are big enough will have their own Discord, Webpage, Facebook Group, etc... for recruiting, and they can make arrangements to meet up in game...but it should ALWAYS require meeting up in game in my honest opinion.

    • RE: End game?

The thing you have to realize is that a Wooden Club and a Steel mace are effectively the same classification of weapon. In other words, the Steel Mace is going to be better, in general, than the Wooden Club, as it is a 1 handed bludgeoning weapon made from better materials....but that's it. Your not looking at massive divergent weapons/armor in the game. There are no 'Mace of Disruption' boss drops to throw things really off kilter.

Just as was said previously, certain equipment is better vs certain mobs, certain equipment is a little bit better because its made of sturdier materials, and some equipment, made from more exotic materials, might even include a Free equivalent enchantment on it, but it is generally only effectively a Tier 1 enchantment, so not massively game-changing.

Each Weapon and Piece of armor has several factors that go into how effective they are, but in and of themselves, none of these factors drastically make a weapon stand out in all situations.

They each have a limited number of enchantments they can hold, with the Torso Armor piece holding the most so far in game, at I believe it was 7 spots. Each enchantment you put on the gear costs 1 spot per tier of the enchantment, so at most, that body armor could hold 2 Tier 3 enchantments, and 1 Tier 1 enchantment, plus if made of an exotic material, have 1 additional Tier 1 equivalent enchantment on it. This is not as huge a difference as gear has in most other MMOs, where the right piece of gear can get you through entire quest lines nearly unscathed or unstoppable (Armor or Weapon)

Also, every piece of gear has a degredation rate, as you use it, it breaks down. Right now, there are no plans for a Repair ability, so gear must be periodically replaced, and the reagents and exotic materials can be harder to acquire than going with the simpler version of gear, not to mention more time consuming to craft overall.

Finally, there is no Level requirement to use specific gear, and not really any Stat requirements worth mentioning. This means a Brand new, day 1 character can join in on a Raid with his friends who've been playing for 6 months, and all the friends have to do to make him comparable in battle is to throw him some mid-to-high level gear. The main deficit that the newb will have in the battles is a lack of combat options, as they will only have unlocked the starting skills for their archetype in this scenario, and they will not have increased their Talent Tree abilities at all yet. Both of these things are nice, but neither by themselves is gamebreakingly going to set a character above the others in a Raid Group.

    • RE: New World by Amazon - Anyone interested?

@Tuoni Actually, it being the Fractured Forums, it's more like we're talking about New World, in comparison and contrast to Fractured, which means among other things, any generalized advice on MMO design tips would be advice wanted in both games, overall.

New World is also in Beta right now, not alpha, true, but still stuck in beta, so my comment still applies. In Beta-testing, quite often you don't see the full spectrum of mobs the final release will feature, shoot, at final release, you don't, as many 'new' mobs are planned for expansions before the game ever reaches release status. Most games have their first 2-3 expansions at least mapped out in advance.

My reasoning, regardless, still holds true. It would be better to see the new mechanic tested of dynamic organic mobs than just getting introduced to yet another mob in game. It always depends on what your testing, overall...even if said dynamic mobs are not planned for immediate implementation, but rather held back for an expansion.

    • RE: Doubts on Hide and Leather Armor

The Tanning tubs main benefit comes from processing special light leathers, like Ghoul Skin and Troll. Also, Casters can cast in Light, but not Medium armor, generally the armor stats are about the same between the Hide and the Leather version, but the Leather is lighter and thus caster-friendly.

    • RE: Guild and races

@AltadarLeviathan said in Guild and races:

it s not another topic regarding facilities to move from planet to another.

In one way, your right. On the surface, this is not another topic about planet hopping, instead, it's once again another topic for your main flag you've been waving on every post I've seen from you, which is InterRacial Grouping. You keep coming at the same over-topic, just using different approaches (sometimes, some are pretty similar) but ultimately we get it. You think that people will want to play different races together in groups and not having that option will turn some players off of Fractured. You have to realize, though, that Fractured is not like your typical fantasy MMO where mixed races traveling together is part of the theme of the game...instead, Racial choice in this MEANS a choice of Playstyle. The only reason they really have 3 races is because they have designed the game for 3 playstyles to be utilized fairly equally in the game, just on the different planets. Race just gives an instant, visual indicator to another player as to what that character's preferred playstyle is. Your not really choosing race for 'race' although each race will have some defining characteristics, which also won't work on the other planets anyway, so again, that topic is moot.

Whether your for or against racial intermingling, it still bares repeating that we don't need 3 or 5 or 7+ topics all thinly veiled ways to bring this same topic to light. If you want to keep beating that racial drum, pick one of your original topics and keep posting there, don't try to keep at it by posting a new topic about it every other day.

    • Play by Post 5e D&D game

Okay, the forums being so dead is driving me nuts. One of my favorite things to do is to catch up on what's going on in Fractured land with my internet peeps, so, I decided to create a Play-By-Post 5e style D&D game.

Now, I love DMing, don't get me wrong, but I want to play too, so this will be a Round-Robin style game, where everyone playing can take a stab at DMing part of the storyline as well. I'll set the opening scene below, and the next poster can respond to the prompt portion of the post, but also build on the story as it goes along.

'You awaken in a mist enshrouded chamber. Slowly, the mist begins to recede enough for you to see yourself in the pale defused light around, describe your character <Prompt>'

((My example, and also my response to the prompt above))
"Whoa, what happened, where am I?" looking down at myself, I notice the fine leather jerkin I'm wearing, dyed a rich blue color. My trouse are also leather, but in creamy soft brown. A scimitar hangs from my left side for a right handed draw, and a strap across my chest, when examined, reveals a fine wooden mandolin. I must be a minstrel of some kind, but I have no memories of the time before. As the mist recedes even further, I notice other forms starting to be revealed <Prompt>

Medium serves another purpose. It is the Combat class starter armor before the Characters can start getting metal armor (Tanks) or custom light armors (Assassins/Archers)

Gladiator Archetype characters don't want to be running around in Scholar's Gear afterall.

@Multiversal not to mention, you'll probably realize right after you finish making the character, before hitting Enter World that you never alotted some of your points, so it is easy to delete the character and start over, and only takes a couple minutes. f you find out later, you get 1 respect a week right now, during testing, so make such changes.

    • RE: First Impressions on the new City System

@Kazzier said in First Impressions on the new City System:

Personally, I think the only safezones should be inside buildings and the starting zones. I think that's a fair compromise. Otherwise I feel it impacts the immersion and identity of the game too heavily. But that's just my personal opinion.

I understand the above is your opinion, but that goes against the original design theme of Fractured too. In the original press releases (Kickstarter overviews) it was billed that it would cater to all 3 major playstyles, PvE, PvP and Mixed, with the human planet being the mixed area, which would be mostly safe but contain some areas where PvP was possible.

So, basically, the Demon World = 100% PvP, little to no safezones whatsoever (except maybe the 2 starting cities per continent)
the Beastmen World = 100% Safe, no PvP anywhere, or very very small 'Arena' style zones, and special Invasion Events being the only break from the norm.
and the Human world should then = about 50% PvP. Much of the actual wilderness is a PvP area, but more civilized areas like established towns would be safe zones (as it is currently being proposed).

Remember, as always, PvE play does not mean Casual play...there are serious players who never, EVER enter into the PvP portion of a game, and there are casual players who spend much of their time in PvP (often dying). It is a major misnomer to think that non-PvP/Safe-zone play makes one a casual gamer. Casual versus serious is more a matter of how much time and effort you invest/are willing to invest in a game. Many so-called serious PvP players invest their time in 20+ different games all over the internet, so obviously they aren't dedicating the lion's share of their attention to a single or couple of games, (such as Fractured). where on the other hand, there are hard-core skillers, as an example, who spend 8+ hrs a day, 5-7 days a week playing games like Old School RuneScape, and even WoW, and nobody should think to call them casual. Skillers/PvE gamers can be 'competitive' players too, they just don't necessarily enter into the PvP competitions, but many games also have other mini-games involving the skills and/or storyline of the game that they get very passionate about. In fact, those who play on Role-Play servers, I'd argue, are some of the most serious gamers of all, playing in modes like HCIM (Hard Core Iron Man), LMS (Last Man Standing) and other modes where a lot of what they have the seriously have to work 10x harder for.
